In pagan times, there was a citadel on that hill. One of the prisoners of the citadel in the IV century was Grigor Lusavorich, who was trying to spread christianity in the region. 1200x900 10_Ararat_and_Khor-Virap.JPG |
After spending years in the prison, Lusavorich was released by the king who decided that turning the nation to chrisianity would be politically advantageous. And so, Armenia became the first christian state in history. Pagan temples were burned down, churches were built on the ruins, and Lusavorich became Armenia's first and most famous saint. 1200x900 12_Khor-Virap_from_adjacent_hill.JPG |
During his imprisonment, Lusavorich was kept in a deep pit, reportedly filled with poisonous snakes and insects. 900x1200 13_Down_into_the_hole.JPG.jpg |
