In pagan times, there was a citadel on that hill.  One of the prisoners of the citadel in the IV century was Grigor Lusavorich, who was trying to spread christianity in the region.

After spending years in the prison, Lusavorich was released by the king who decided that turning the nation to chrisianity would be politically advantageous.  And so, Armenia became the first christian state in history.  Pagan temples were burned down, churches were built on the ruins, and Lusavorich became Armenia's first and most famous saint.
